Active on the international art scene since the late 1960s, Frank Uwe Laysiepen, better known as Ulay, has been featured in numerous group shows and a number of solo exhibitions, yet his I Other exhibition at the City Art Gallery Ljubljana is his first major solo presentation in the region. The exhibition starts with some of the key works in Ulay’s oeuvre, in which the artist focuses on his own body and its social alienation, and then goes on to engage us in a fascinating dialogue with presentations of his relations to his fellow humans, be it close friends or complete strangers.

The selected painters are not only joined by their age (all born in the early 1970s), but also by their similar approaches regarding the questions of representation / representativeness of painting, which received new answers during the 1990s. The show will display works by Viktor Bernik, Žiga Kariž, Gorazd Krnc, Arjan Pregl, Sašo Vrabič and Miha Štrukelj.
Opening of the exhibition will be on Thursday, 29 September, at 7 pm at City Art Gallery Ljubljana.

The exhibition Let’s go Onwards! Slovenian Photography 1990–2015 will present works from authors, who marked the discussed time period with their subjective poetics and alternative concepts on the functions and reach of the medium. Social changes that occurred during the discussed time frame were also reflected in individual visual practices, photography among them, also due to an increase flow of information on current photographic trends and aesthetic paradigms, which stand out the most within international frames.

December 3. 2015 - February 8. 2016An exhaustive insight into artistic functioning, often related to the elementarity of everyday and caught in creative stories, is also provided by the overall exhibition of the academic painter Zvonko Čoh. The visual journey into numerous artistic narratives is taking place in his so-far most comprehensive exhibition at the City Art Gallery (MGML), titled Capriccio – Vse, kar vidim, počečkam [Capriccio—I Doodle over Whatever I See]. The complete selection of exhibited artworks aims at four substantially and technically formally explicit and fundamental lines that reinforce and underscore all essential features of Čoh’s artistic poetics.more

September 24. 2015 - November 22. 2015Inside Out - Not So White Cube is a long-term research and co-curatorial cross-disciplinary project initiated by Alenka Gregorič, the artistic director of the City Art Gallery Ljubljana and CC Tobacco 001 (MGML), and Suzana Milevska, independent curator and art theorist based in Macedonia. The project consists of two exhibitions (or possibly more), a conference, and two publications (a catalogue and a reader).more
