The Oton Župančič Memorial Collection – the legacy of the Slovenian poet Oton Župančič (Vinica, 23 January 1878 – Ljubljana, 11 June 1949) which, during the 1985 to 2000 period, formed part of the permanent museum exhibition put on at the central premises of the City Museum of Ljubljana, has found a new home. The Oton Župančič Library readily accepted the Museum’s initiative, thereby adding new, museal contents to its underlying programme of activities. The name of the institution was thereby fittingly connected with the personality of Oton Župančič, one of the most prominent artists and public figures active in the cultural life of the first half of the 20th century in Slovenia. In order to make the collection as accessible to visitors as possible, its presentation has been made on the ground floor of the renovated library at Kersnikova 2 in Ljubljana. In the framework of their common programmes, both institutions will help revive the artist’s legacy in our time. They will encourage their visitors to discover the less well known sides of the artist’s life, inviting them to read and experience Župančič’s artistic oeuvre.
The atmosphere of Župančič's rooms, his artistic work, and the objects accompanying him tell a story of both the artist and his time. Župančič’s literary oeuvre, in whose framework his last collection of poems Zimzelen pod snegom (The Evergreen beneath the Snow, 1945) is specially emphasised, encourages visitors to read the artist’s poems.
The great respect and reputation the poet enjoyed during his lifetime are evidenced by numerous honourable recognitions, diploma certificates and medals. Župančič was entrusted with functions in various cultural institutions and organisations; in his capacity as President of the Slovenian Writers’ Association, the French Institute, the Slovenian Pen Centre and the Slovenska matica publishing society, Župančič had an important mission in both Slovenia and abroad.
“Due to his significant contributions made to the literature, culture and language of the Slovenian nation”, he became an honorary citizen of the Municipality of Ljubljana in 1938.
Guided tours of the Memorial Collection: every first Thursday in a month (excluding July and August) at 11 a.m., on the ground floor of the Oton Župančič Library. Tours will be guided by the collection’s curator, Dragica Zadnik Trobec, Museum Adviser.
