Samo

U la la !

1. 7. 2021–28. 8. 2021

The basic tendency to create works of art is always individualistic. It is born out of a personal reaction, escalated into artistic action, from a subjective point of view. This subjective level encapsulates all emotions, ideas, rationality, goals and values. Such art, unencumbered from all modern trends, is created by the self-made artist Samo.

He sincerely and unreservedly creates a distinguishable artistic language, which through many works of art speaks to people with its simple, real and directly drawn art story. The exhibition is the most comprehensive presentation of the painter's works so far. The artist exhibits all the essential elements of his creative poetics, which could be defined solemnly-humorously as orthodox infantilism, imbecile expressionism and abstract hedonism. His works of art are distinctly based on linear strokes or lines, the unusualness of form and colour as a connective matter.

In his distinct way, Samo ploughs through the fine art and persistently carves his own artistic path, which cannot be embedded in any artistic trend or direction, firmly positioning him as a unique creator. We recognize him by his direct and lively artistic communication, in which he repeatedly challenges the artistic language, looking for new possibilities for its expression, as the bearers of images, i.e. materials. He takes the latter mostly from his own environment - the already used materials, which he ingeniously translates to the fine arts.

The artist uses wood, cardboard and paper, and since recently also forex, as a material basis - as has been his habit since the early days of his creation. In particular, wood and cardboard remain the essential and strongest bearers for him, into which he stabs, carves and ignites, or paints his experiences, obsessions and inventions. And because the author loves to interact with space, he decided to unearth from the rich treasury of his works some dusty, humorous, yet also very solemn artefacts created in the last thirty years. With them, he created new installations adapted to space in the City Art Gallery of Ljubljana. But the painter is driven by curiosity of how to express the relationship between him and the facts of life, how to condense thoughts or ideas into a visually rounded art story and to enrich all this emotionally and then paint it.

The visual matter and the objective reality that Samo depicts, the verbal interventions in the works of art, as well as the reliance on life at present, have freshened up in the last period when he also started dealing with abstraction, in which familiarity retreats into elusiveness or stronger associativity. He is also a creator with a distinct and strong critical response to contemporary social problems, as he depicts dark stories through artistic images, which, as current events show, are realized as a necessary modern evil, devouring everyone and their essence of existence in general.

During the exhibition, Samo will alter the layouts in some rooms, draw on the walls and try to surprise visitors in some other way. He will try to keep the exhibition as a living and changing organism until the end.
