Saša Dev, Architect
Saša Dev, Plečnik's student and an architect of the interwar Maribor, was one of the co-creators of modernist architecture in Slovenia. His architectural works remain relevant today, as he would do more than just follow contemporary trends as a young architect but rather surpass them by several decades in the context of the relationship towards urban fabric.
Architectural creations of Saša Dev from the 1930s and 1940s (some made in collaboration with Jaroslav Černigoj) are now iconic landmarks of Maribor. Through his mentorship and authorship work after World War II and as the director of Projekt Maribor bureau, he also re-established the foundations of the “Maribor School of Architecture”. Saša Dev was a creator, musician, and an intellectual whose oeuvre is now finally being presented to the public.
The Saša Dev exhibition is the first time the Plečnik House is hosting the Maribor Art Gallery. The curators of the exhibition, Stojan Skalicky and Simona Vidmar, prepared a comprehensive presentation of Dev’s influence on the development of Maribor. Skalicky emphasises that, “Dev decisively stands on the ideas based on modernist architecture, urbanism, and design. However, he does more than merely uncritically accept and imitate trends. His is an analytical and constructive approach, and his treatment of details reveals that his foundations lie in the school of the noble principles of the great master Plečnik, who he deeply respected throughout his life.”

Tickets
Visits of the original Plečnik’s home are only possible with a guided tour that begins every full hour. In case the visitors on the guided tours come from different countries, each tour is conducted in two languages – Slovenian and English.
